Singapore Polytechnic is a renowned institution of higher learning in Singapore.
It was established in 1954 and is one of the oldest polytechnics in the country.
The campus has gone through several relocations over the years, starting from the Prince Edward Campus to the Ayer Rajah Campus and finally to the Dover Road Campus.
I remember being relocated to the Ayer Rajah Campus during my first year and then to the Dover Road Campus for the rest of my time there.
The facilities at the Dover Road Campus were much better and it provided a conducive environment for learning.
Singapore Polytechnic offers a wide range of diploma courses in various fields such as engineering, business, design, and media.
1977 – Went for my 1st lesson at Singapore Polytechnic’s Prince Edward Campus
Before the term started, I attended the 1st year freshman orientation events.
We had talks, games, social dinners with the seniors.
At that time, Freshman orientation events were organized by Student Union (funded and managed totally by students).
We had specially designed T-Shirts and Paper folders with “SINGAPORE POLYTECHNIC” branding.
1977 – Re-located to Singapore Polytechnic’s Ayer Rajah Campus
In the second half of my first year at Singapore Polytechnic, I was relocated to the Ayer Rajah campus, which offered improved technical facilities and better-equipped workshops.
For the machining workshops, we were required to wear full-length overalls with long sleeves for protection against sparks and sharp edges.
Not knowing where to buy one, I turned to my mother and asked her to make a pair for me.
It turned out that students from all four classes also didn’t know where to get their overalls.
When they saw mine, they began asking where I had bought it.
Before long, I was taking measurements and collecting orders — at $30 each — so my mother could sew custom overalls for them!
1978 – Re-located again to Singapore Polytechnic’s Dover Road Campus
2nd year Poly Semester onward, I was transferred to the new Dover Road Campus.
